[Seoul’s best coffee shops] Camouflage; 카모플라쥬

I feel like the real me here.
No excuses.
No desire to be something that I’m not.
Just the genuine me. Who I am at the core.
The real me, enjoying a cup of coffee.
And it feels absolutely liberating.

The streets of Seongsu-dong, a neighbourhood in Seoul, can be best described as industrial turned creative. Although warehouses still remain, their insides have taken an artistic turn: they’ve been transformed into cafes, art spaces, and boutique shops.

If you’re a creative, you’ll feel a unique sense of belonging as you walk down these streets. You’ll be overcome with a sense of inspiration and an urging motivation to continue pursuing your dreams.

Nestled in one of Seongsu-dong’s side streets is Camouflage. A perfect location for this unique cafe’s style to shine.

Seongsu-dong (성수동) is mainstream, but it has a raw feel to it. To put it simply, it’s a cool neighbourhood. That’s why we chose it for Camouflage.

How Camouflage became Camouflage

The story behind the name Camouflage is a unique one.

Camouflage; latte

Five years ago, the owners of Camouflage lived in Sydney and didn’t have much money.

At the time, they would buy clothes and return them. Among these articles of clothing, the most memorable one that they wore was a camouflage-patterned shirt.

I named the cafe ‘Camouflage’ because it was the shirt with a camouflage pattern that stood out the most among the clothes we wore back then.

This cafe has created a space where customers can feel like they are at home. Cozy and happy. But most importantly, it has created a space where people can feel like they belong.

It’s a place to hang out with friends and catch up on all of your moments: happy ones, exciting ones, challenging ones.

It’s a place where you can come alone and have time to reflect. Reflect on your day, reflect on your dreams, or reflect on the things you need to let go of.

It’s a place where time stops, and you’re left to enjoy the present moment.

Our tastes are reflected in the set-up of the cafe. All of the décor are personal belongings, and the music that is played is music that we would listen to. Rather than creating something for a cafe, we brought our room as it was.

Coffee + drinks

Camouflage offers a number of drinks on their menu.

Ryan recommends the filter coffee, piccolo, and mango beer to customers.

House Blend and Panama Carmen Geisha

Camouflage’s current house blend being served is Columbian Supremo Huila and Guatemala Antigua El Panorama (both washed process; tasting notes: caramel, chocolate, silky).
