What to pack on your next trip

We only ever read and talk about the material aspects of what we need to pack for our next trip.

Laptop? Check!
Map? Check!
Clothes? I sure hope so!

But these aren’t the most important things we need to take with ourselves on our next trip. Those online lists or YouTube videos explaining the essentials to pack in your suitcase often miss out on the most essential elements that you need to take with you.

So what could those be?
Without further ado, here are the 4 most necessary things that you need to bring with you on your next trip:

1. A sense of wonder and adventure

“blessed are the curious for they shall have adventures”
Lovelle Drachman

I personally believe that it is very important to continually have a sense of curiosity when you decide to go traveling. Be curious in what the culture and country you are traveling to has to offer. Learn about their traditions, try to learn some of the language, ask questions about the country. Immerse yourself within your traveling adventure and wonder about the things you come across and hear about.

One way that I have been able to get myself into this sense of curiosity and wonder has been to push myself out of my comfort zone. I am typically very comfortable with Canadian food, Canadian culture, and the Canadian way of life – so whenever I go traveling, I try to make sure to try that new food, to take part in that festival that I would have never come across in Canada, and to explore the areas that I had not first planned to go to.

2. Happiness

I personally think that having an air of happiness around you is one of the most important things to have when you are traveling. Any trip can be a fun and memorable one if you remain optimistic and happy. For example, you may have gone to Hawaii with the hopes of laying in the sun and tanning. However, on one of the days of your trip, it starts to rain a lot. Instead of being negative about the rain, it is important to find things that you can do to still enjoy your time in Hawaii. Go dance in the rain! Or perhaps, instead of sun tanning, you can go try a submarine ride – there are just so many things to do!

“spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever leave you without leaving happier”
Mother Teresa

Not only will your trip be more enjoyable if you exude happiness, but you will also make others happy when they cross paths with you. Happiness and being joyful are contagious, and it is the best feeling when you can make someone else’s day a bit brighter just by smiling.

3. Appreciation & Gratitude

“when you look at life through the eyes of gratitude, the world becomes a magical and amazing place”
Jennifer Gayle

Remain grateful throughout the entirety of your trip. Not everyone gets the chance to travel. It is such an amazing opportunity to have and I think that it is very important for us to not forget this.

4. Acceptance

“ye are all the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch. Deal ye one with another with the utmost love and harmony, with friendliness and fellowship”
Baha’u’llah

Not all cultures are the same. You may travel to a country where the culture is similar to yours, however, you may also travel to a country where the culture is drastically different.

No matter what, always be accepting of other cultures. You may not agree with everything that a certain culture puts forward; however, I personally think that it is important not to judge a culture based on your own. When you take the time to learn about that new culture you will come to the realization that the world is so much more beautiful when many cultures come together and coexist with one another. How dull would it be if everyone on this earth was the exact same?

So now that you’ve read my list of travel essentials, what do you think of it? What else would you add to it?

  1. I agree with this completely!
Especially the gratitude part. We’re all so lucky to be able to travel at all so it’s good to remember we’re privileged to see more of the world.
You must be fun to travel with if you stay so happy. 😀
